about

Here's my 2017 RPM Challenge offering... It's a bit of a cheat to the spirit of the actual challenge, as all the tunes were written years ago, and I actually used some of those recordings as they are... that said, it was super fun and thats all that matters right? So here's some background to my 4 tracking days...

My Broham, Jamie Decato and I had rented a 4 track a few times in 1984 and knew we were interested in recording. After he had done some recording at Berklee in Boston, he knew what machine to get. A Tascam 234. We saved up over the spring and summer and went to Wurlitzers! The 234 wasn't cheap, $750! and the matching 106 mixer was $500… doh! When he went back to school at the end of the summer, I took the rig with me to my Dads in Londonderry. I used that rig from 85 to 93 or so. Later in the 80s I had added a midi sequencer (Kawia Q80) so I could stretch out a little more, and used that machine in 90s recording local bands, TV, Radio spots, Film and Video soundtrack stuff.

So my idea for RPM 2017 was to revisit songs I had recorded on 4 track… turns out that I didn't record many "songs. At least not many that where any good!! The tunes I chose for this are more experiments. It was really fun and much more difficult that I had thought to keep the spirit of the tunes, and not have to learn the parts note for note which I did on a few. In a few cases, I've added a separate track with few minutes of the original recording for fun, and some are the actual 4 track recordings.

Thankfully, I transferred the 2 milk crates full of cassette tapes to ProTools back in 2005, while the machine was still working great, because in 2012 my basement flooded and all the tapes were destroyed! Bummer…
